Basic Skills

Basic Skills can be defined as 'the ability to read, write and speak in English and use mathematics at a level necessary to function and progress at work and in society in general'.

One in six adults do not have the literacy skills expected of an average 11-year-old.

Poor Basic Skills are thought to have significantly hampered Britain's economy and have been the subject of much heated debate.

The government has introduced several ongoing local, regional, and national strategies to try and improve Basic Skills.
