Department for Education and Skills (DfES)
The Department for Education and Skills (DfES) is a government body that was set up with the purpose of creating opportunity, releasing potential and achieving excellence for all. It is responsible for children's services, education and lifelong learning in England.
The DfES' aim is to help build a competitive economy and inclusive society. Its objectives include raising standards in schools, tackling the adult skills gap, and making sure that all 19-year-olds are ready for skilled employment or higher education.
The Secretary of State for Education and Skills has overall responsibility for the Department, its policies and its strategy.
