Lines of learning
In October 2004, the final report of the reform of 14-19 education was presented to the government.
It proposed introducing a unified framework of qualifications, organised around diplomas that were named according to the lines of learning (or study routes) to which they related.
The report set out proposals for each line of learning to reflect a sector of industry and/or academic area of study, and cover a wide range of academic and vocational subjects.
