Social Exclusion Unit (SEU)
Social exclusion is when people or individuals are socially disadvantaged due to factors such as poverty, unemployment, poor skills, ill health, family breakdown and poor housing.
The Social Exclusion Unit (SEU) was set up by the Prime Minister in 1997 to help individuals in England who are in such situations.
The SEU aims to tackle the underlying causes of social exclusion by working with other government departments. The unit's work includes individual projects to tackle specific issues and wide-ranging programmes to assess past policy and identify future trends.
The unit is run by the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister.
