VQ Day - Wednesday 24 June 2009
The VQ Day national event for England took place on 24 June at Hackney Community College. Demonstrations took place showcasing a range of vocational skills, including dance, catering, fashion, legal practice and motorsports.
Celebrity Chef James Martin hosted the Day and presented the regional Learner of the Year and Young Learner of the Year awards. From the regional winners the names of the overall winners were announced. The award for Learner of the Year went to Aaron Collins from Croydon College and the award for Young Learner of the Year went to Lucia Castro from Loreto College. Find out more about the winners
Edge, the education foundation who led the day, released a review of vocational qualifications, which showed an increase of 11 per cent in the number of qualifications awarded last year, up to 3.6 million. Download the report
Chris Banks, Chairman LSC, gave his support for the Day: “VQ Day, is an excellent way of recognising and rewarding the achievements and successes of millions of vocational learners each year. Vocational qualifications open doors for learners which can lead the way to better opportunities for individual students and for the nation as a whole, this is crucial at time when raising skills has never been more important to the economy.”
The FE Reputation Strategy Group (FERSG) are also keen supporters of VQ Day. FERSG Chair and Principal of York College Dr Alison Birkinshaw spoke to E-Politix.com about VQ Day and the work of FERSG.
