Derived Variables Business Definition 2008/2009

DEFINITION

1. Derived variables are used within SPSS by the Data Service to produce statistical information for analysis by the LSC and other organisations.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION

2. A derived variable is a variable whose calculation is based on information from one or more other fields, for example, the A_AGEST derived variable displays the age of the learner at the start of the aim. This information is not collected directly in the Individualised Learner Record (ILR), but is calculated from the fields containing the date of birth of the learner, and the start date of the aim.

3. The Data Service takes the raw data from the ILR and inputs the derived variables. The raw data is then processed as datasets which can then be used for analytical purposes.

4. Each Derived Variable is accompanied by a Data Definition, which defines it and describes it.
