Performance indicators 1997-98
This publication (available for download from this page) contains performance indicators for 432 further education (FE) and sixth form colleges in England, together with analysis and interpretation for the college sector as a whole.
The indicators for individual colleges relate to the 1996-97 and 1997-98 college years with trends since 1995-96 included in the section on analysis and interpretation.
The Council has adopted five performance indicators which focus on key areas of college activity. The performance indicators have been developed to complement existing published information and have three main purposes:
- to enable colleges to compare their achievements with those of equivalent institutions
- to provide information to the Department for Education and Employment (DfEE), training and enterprise councils (TECs), the Council and the general public as part of the accountability for spending public funds
- to enable colleges and the Council to monitor changes in performance at each college over time.

The spreadsheet (available for download from this page) shows the 1997-98, 1996-97 and 1995-96 performance indicators listed by individual college.
Colleges are shown alphabetically within five college types (agriculture and horticulture, art and design and performing arts, specialist designated, general further education and tertiary, sixth form college).
The following information is shown for each college:
- the Council region the college is located in
- the results of the five performance indicators for 1997-98, 1996-97 and 1995-96
- some contextual information including: the number of full-time and part-time students at college; the proportion of students recruited from areas of deprivation, and the average level of funding the college received from the Council in 1997-98.
Note
The five indicators have been calculated from information provided by colleges as part of the annual cycle of student and financial data returns to the Council. Results for 1996-97 and 1995-96 may differ slightly from those previously published by the Council, reflecting revisions to some colleges' data.
