Performance indicators 1998-99
This publication (available for download from this page) contains performance indicators for 426 further education (FE) and sixth form colleges in England plus, for the first time, similar data and comment for 216 LEA maintained and independent external institutions, together with analysis and interpretation for the further education sector as a whole.
The indicators for individual colleges relate to the 1997-98 and 1998-99 college years with trends since 1996-97 included in the section on analysis and interpretation. For external institutions, performance indicators are shown only for 1998-99.
The Council has adopted five performance indicators which focus on key areas of the institutions activity. The performance indicators have been developed to complement existing published information and have three main purposes:
- to enable institutions to compare their achievements with those of an equivalent type
- to provide information to the Department for Education and Employment (DfEE), training and enterprise councils (TECs), the Council and the general public as part of the accountability for spending public funds
- to enable institutions and the Council to monitor changes in performance at each institution over time.

The spreadsheet (available for download from this page) shows the 1998-99, 1997-98 and 1996-97 performance indicators listed by individual institution.
Institutions are shown alphabetically within five college types (agriculture and horticulture, art and design and performing arts, specialist designated, general further education and tertiary, sixth form college), with a sixth category for external institutions.
The following information is shown for each institution:
- the Council region the institution is located in
- the results of the five performance indicators for 1998-99 and 1997-98 for colleges, and for 1998-99 for external institutions
- some contextual information including: the number of full-time and part-time students at institution; the proportion of students recruited from areas of deprivation, and the average level of funding the institution received from the Council in 1998-99.
Note
The five indicators have been calculated from information provided by institutions as part of the annual cycle of student and financial data returns to the Council. Results for 1997-98 and 1996-97 may differ slightly from those previously published by the Council, reflecting revisions to some colleges' data.
