First Female Student Studies Motorsports at Southgate College
The College is providing their new specialist ‘Motorsports’ option for students studying the ‘BTEC National Diploma in Vehicle Repair and Technology’.
Samantha Bowden, who is the first female student on the motorsport option said, “The course will help me realise my goal of working in the motorsport industry. It is very exciting.”
She said “I started playing around with bits and pieces on a friend’s car and I wanted to find out more about how cars work.”
Samantha chose the motorsport option so she could have the opportunity to work on fast cars. She said “it’s the speed, sports cars have always fascinated me, I love the technology behind them it’s unique.”
The course offers the students the chance to focus on the motorsport side of the car industry and gain knowledge that could lead to a job in the glamorous world of motor racing.
Samantha likes to “race on the track, getting to compete against my class mates is a great buzz.”
She commented that “the motorsport option really promotes team work, when you are working on sports cars you have to work as part of a team.”
“Especially when you are racing, every second counts so team work is very important.”
The College has equipped the students with two go-karts and all the safety gear they need. Fifteen lucky students will get to use the karts for practical work (stripping the engine etc.), as well as getting the opportunity to race them at Rye House.
