0823 LSC announces new regional council for London

The new regional council of the Learning and Skills Council in London held its first meeting at Centre Point today. The council, which was established as part of the Further Education and Training Act 2007, replaces the 5 local non-executive councils and is chaired by Claire Ighodaro, CBE.

Today is the first anniversary of the national roll-out of the Adult Learning Grant, which offers people aged 19 and over up to £30 per week to go back to or continue in learning. Initially piloted across the UK in 2003-2006, the scheme was so well received that nationwide introduction was brought forward a year. The event, recently organised by the Learning and Skills Council London South, saw 11 local training providers set an example to other local employers by signing the Skills Pledge, committing to support their employees to develop their skills and fulfil their potential.

LSC Celebrates Europe Day

The Learning and Skills Council celebrated Europe Day on Friday May the 9th by having an image of the European Union flag and Union Jack projected onto the front of the Centre Point building.;;The celebration marks the recent announcement of the new European Social Fund (ESF) programme for 2007-13, which will help thousands of disadvantaged Londoners get qualified and enter the job market. A total of £324 million has been made available in London of which £188 million will be managed by the LSC. The programme, which kicks off in Spring/Summer 2008, aims to assist around 285,000 individuals.;
