Working together for the people of Northumberland

The prospect of spending the summer looking for work is now a distant memory for 11 long term unemployed people from Northumberland now they have a job and a future career at Sainsbury’s to look forward to thanks to learning news skills. The 10 women and one man, who had all been out of work for more than six months, have now been employed in various roles at the Sainsbury’s store in Alnwick thanks to a Local Employment Partnership (LEP) involving the supermarket, Jobcentre Plus and the Learning & Skills Council (LSC) North East.

Colin lands new career

A keen North East sea fisherman has landed his dream job after redundancy cast him adrift. Since 38 year old Colin Todd from Hendon in Sunderland lost his job after 13 years working for a local crane manufacturer, he has turned his hand to a new career in joinery. Initially Colin took a lower paid job as an assistant store man, but knew that his real interests lay in woodworking and joinery. To broaden his skills, he enrolled on a series of Learning and Skills Council (LSC) North East funded courses with ETEC Ltd, a not-for-profit training and development company based in Sunderland.

The NHS reap the benefits of the Skills Pledge

The Learning and Skills Council (LSC) North East is celebrating the second anniversary of the Skills Pledge with the NHS in the region, which this week marks 18 months of commitment to people development. ;With nearly 77,000 employees and as the largest employer in the region, the NHS in the North East is a front-runner in the national drive to develop the literacy and numeracy skills of its workforce and was one of the first organisations to make the Pledge in April 2008.

Support for North East workers facing redundancy

North East employers with staff facing the threat of redundancy are able to tap into a multi million pot of funding to equip their workers with the skills needed to stay in work or make it easier for them to find alternative employment. The Train to Gain Redundancy Support Fund, funded by the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) North East through the European Social Fund (ESF), provides short, sharp, job related training for anyone identified at risk of being made redundant to help them get another job.

New career for former call centre staff

Four former call centre workers are engineering an exciting new future for themselves in manufacturing industry following the disappointment of redundancy. ;The four have joined the major industrial utilities and services provider, Sembcorp UK, as process technicians on a two year Adult Apprenticeship programme. Steven Wilkes, 30, Stuart Slater, 26, Stacey Ritchie, 22 and Nick Tann, 20, all from Redcar, have swapped headsets for handtools since leaving the OC5 call centre at Wilton International site last September.

Beka is an inspiration

A Whickham teenager’s ‘life changing’ experiences helping children with varying needs and abilities enjoy sporting activities have helped her make it through to the finals of the prestigious National Apprenticeship Awards in London. Beka High, 16 and a pupil of Whickham Comprehensive School, won the title of Young Apprentice of the Year in the regional heats of the Awards and will fight it out with young apprentices from across the country at the national competition in July.

£75 million Pledge to Help Parents Train for a Brighter Tomorrow

Struggling parents from across the North East who want to get back into work could benefit from a new £75m initiative introduced by the Learning and Skills Council to provide them with vital childcare support while they learn. The ‘Free Childcare for Training and Learning for Work Scheme’ will pay up to £175 per week per child, providing real help now for childcare and travel costs for out of work parents across the North East

New skills come top of the class

Dedication and hard work have seen 36 year old, Tracy Chown from Tees Valley turn into a confident career woman, having previously suffered from low self esteem as a result of unemployment. Just two years ago single mum Tracy felt that she was unemployable due to her lack of formal qualifications. However, with the help of the Redcar and Cleveland Adult Education Service and learning opportunities funded by the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) North East, Tracy has achieved her numeracy and literacy goals and landed her dream job as a full time teaching assistant.

Chris Roberts moves to national post with LSC

The Learning and Skills Council (LSC) North East regional director - Chris Roberts - has been appointed an interim national post to see through the transition of the LSC to 3 new national services, superseding the LSC from April 2010 and manage the current day to day operations of the LSC nationally.
