Samantha unclasps the key to learning

A young County Durham apprentice is proving to be a lucky charm at the UK base of an international jewellery company. 22 year old Samantha Church, from Newton Aycliffe, is showing herself to be a real asset to Pandora, a Danish company with its UK head quarters in Shildon. Thanks to the Apprenticeship, Samantha is now on course to complete a qualification that she originally started in 2005 but did not finish. The Apprenticeship has enabled her to earn a wage whilst completing a Business Administration GNVQ Level 2 at ITEC in Newton Aycliffe – a winning combination for Samantha.

Career jus rolls out for Campbell

Christmas has come early for a former engineering apprentice who has secured a permanent engineering role at the Jus-Rol pastry manufacturing site in Berwick-upon-Tweed – just in time to help the company cope with the festive pastry rush! After completing a year as an apprentice engineer, funded by the Learning and Skills Council North East, Campbell Blakey has been offered a permanent position with the company as shift engineer.

Blossoming skills at Rosewood;

Staff at a North East care home are blooming with confidence after successfully completing qualifications funded by the region’s Learning and Skills Council. ;All seven care workers at the Rosewood residential home in Grangetown, Middlesbrough have achieved level 2 NVQs in Health and Social Care, which is assisting in the delivery of quality service to the home’s eight residents.

From classroom fear to teaching career

As someone who was bullied and ridiculed throughout her school days, 52 year old Susan Appleby from Durham was happy to leave the confines of the classroom behind her at 15. Yet, despite an understandable fear of the education system, Susan has taken the huge step of going back to the classroom by undertaking Learning and Skills Council North East funded courses – this time as a teacher.

The power of training

A North East supplier of gas and electricity has experienced the real power of training after taking advantage of the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) North East’s Train to Gain service. npower has seen an improvement in customer relations and staff retention among staff who undertook Skills for Life qualifications through the Train to Gain service and to top it all has been awarded the prestigious National Example of Excellence by Business in the Community in July this year for the training programme.

Colleges in Tyne and Wear contribute millions to the local economy

Whilst there is wide understanding of the role a college plays in educating people their role in terms of sustaining the economy is often under stated. Yet the economic role the colleges in the North East play is huge, affecting not only the lives of their students and employees, but the wider community through the investment in their premises and facilities. Jackie Fisher, Principal and Chief Executive, Newcastle College, said “Educational institutions like Newcastle College are making an enormous difference to the City as they invest in and expand their premises and facilities. Not only are we contributing to the resurgence and regeneration of the area, but we are also playing a major part in the region’s economic well-being.”

Colleges in the North East contribute millions to the regional economy

Whilst there is wide understanding of the role a college plays in educating people their role in terms of sustaining the economy is often under stated. Yet the economic role the colleges in the North East play is huge, affecting not only the lives of their students and employees, but the wider community through the investment in their premises and facilities. Sarah Robinson, principal, Darlington College, said “Following our relocation and construction of brand new building, our new college occupies a prime position at the flagship Central Park development. The substantial investment in state-of-the-art facilities, as well as improving the local educational provision, contributes to economy beyond the college site.”

Tyne and Wear Colleges contribute millions to local economy

New findings, published as the LSC North East celebrates Colleges’ Week, reveal the substantial contribution the Further Education sector makes to the region’s economy. Colleges’ Week is a celebration of the invaluable role colleges play in unlocking talent in communities and transforming the lives of learners. Angela O’Donoghue, City of Sunderland College principal, said: “Colleges play a key role in the regeneration of any area and at City of Sunderland College we have ambitious plans which will see investment in our estate in excess of £100 million, making a major contribution to the area’s economy, as well as expanding and improving our educational offering to the people of the North East.”

Tees Valley Colleges Contribute Millions to Local Economy

New findings, published as the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) North East celebrates Colleges’ Week, reveal the substantial contribution the Further Education sector makes to the region’s economy. John Hogg, Principal of Middlesbrough College, said: “The all new Middlesbrough College at Middlehaven is an iconic work of art set against the Middlesbrough skyline. Not only does it herald a new era for further education in Middlesbrough, but it plays a major part in regenerating the town itself and provides state of the art facilities to enable students to realise their full potential.”
