Train to Gain

Train to Gain is aimed at helping businesses get the training they need to stay ahead in a competitive business environment by improving the skills of the workforce. In the North East it has been developed as part of a wider effort by the Regional Skills Partnership to ensure that integrated skills and business support is available to employers.

A skills brokerage service jointly funded by the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) and the Regional Development Agency, One NorthEast, offers impartial advice and matches training needs to local providers of learning. Train to Gain ensures that flexible, responsive training programmes are delivered to meet employers’ needs. Some of the training may be eligible for full or partial subsidy.

A core element of Train to Gain is the offer of fully funded Skills for Life and first Level 2 National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs). Although open to all employers, Train to Gain is being aimed particularly at “hard to reach” companies such as those that have not taken up the Employer Training Pilot which has operated in the region since 2004 or that do not have Investors in People status.

In the North East the LSC and One NorthEast are working closely with other agencies to ensure that the design and delivery of Train to Gain is fully integrated with other types of support on offer to business.

This includes ensuring that the skills brokerage service is integrated with the Business Link branded support service and that support available is fully aligned with the support to employers from other agencies in the region such as Jobcentre Plus - who can assist with recruitment of staff.
