Lancashire winners announced

The winners of the Lancashire leg of the Learning and Skills Council (LSC) North West Learner Awards have been announced at a glittering awards ceremony at the Dunkenhalgh Hotel, Blackburn,

They were presented with a trophy and cheque for £250 by BBC TV presenter John Craven OBE. The highly commended finalists received a cheque for £100 and a certificate.

Winners included:

Further Education Award (Vocational)
Jamie Warren, Skelmersdale and Ormskirk College

Further Education Award (Academic)
Elizabeth Ritchie, Myerscough College

Apprentice Employer of the Year Award
BAE Systems Military Air Solutions, Balderstone

Personal Achiever of the Year Award
Victoria Snook
Training provider - Preston College
Employer - Angela Inman Hair Studio

Apprentice of the Year Award
Hajra Dawood
Training provider - Training West Lancashire
Employer - Rosy Apple Childcare Ltd

Advanced Apprentice of the Year Award
Mercia Woest
Training provider - Blackburn College
Employer - Lancashire County Council

Guest of honour John Craven OBE praised the finalists for their dedication and achievement, and said: "Apprenticeship is such an honourable word - skilled craftsmen and women passing on their knowledge and experience to ensure skills are retained for future generations. Many of the skills I learned as an apprentice have stood me in good stead throughout my working life. Tonight you are the stars of the show, the future of this country, and you are all winners - congratulations."

Ian Haworth, Area Director for the LSC in Lancashire thanked all the people who participated throughout the awards process and added: "Awards play their part in making everyone more successful. There's a rigorous selection process and to be nominated is an achievement in its own right. In learning there are no losers, so congratulations to all who entered. I applaud all the finalists - this has been a fantastic night of inspiration."
