Hotel husband and wife duo achieve training success
Almost 3,000 employers in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight are using Train to Gain, which is run by the Learning and Skills Council (LSC), the organisation that exists to make England better skilled and more competitive, to help businesses get the training they need to succeed. Train to Gain’s recent second anniversary highlighted the variety of businesses that have benefited from training their staff in a range of practical and business skills.
Husband and wife team Wayne and Angela Lawrence, joint owners of the Roseglen Hotel on the Isle of Wight have spurred each other on to complete business administration and customer service courses through Train to Gain. So far, Wayne has achieved a NVQ Level 2 in Customer Service and Angela has completed an NVQ Level 3 in Business Administration.
Angela says: “Completing the NVQs through Train to Gain has given us the confidence to run our business effectively. Broken down into flexible units, the training has worked hand-in-hand with the daily demands of running the business.
“The training was very practical, linking directly to my job, so I was able to make continuous improvements and implement changes including re-vamping our customer services. Whilst we had lots of positive comments from customers, we did not provide a way for people to record anything that needed changing. Since the training I’ve introduced customer feedback forms which help us respond to customers’ needs.”
Since Wayne and Angela completed their NVQ’s, two Polish hotel staff are now working towards basic skills qualifications and are being trained in housekeeping and kitchen work.
Smart Training, one of the LSC’s Isle of Wight-based providers is delivering the training to the Roseglen Hotel. Jenny Crowe, Training Advisor from Smart Training and Recruitment, says: “Through Train to Gain we were able to identify individual training plans for Wayne and Angela to help them fit the qualifications around running their business. We are very proud of their achievements.”
Martin Lamb, LSC Area Director for Hampshire and the Isle of Wight says: “Train to Gain has had tremendous success already, and the evidence is there from businesses like the Roseglen Hotel, that the programme delivers high quality skills training, that boosts business performance. I believe that in the current economic climate, with local businesses under intense pressure in a competitive marketplace, Train to Gain is potentially even more valuable to the business community than before.”
Around 70,000 employees across the South East have benefited from Train to Gain so far, which offers training solutions from basic literacy and numeracy skills right up to higher level management and leadership skills. Train to Gain’s independent skills brokers assess an organisation’s skills needs, give free and impartial advice and then signpost businesses to a training solution.
