About Us
1. What is the LSC?
The Learning and Skills Council (LSC) is responsible for funding and planning education and training for over 16-year-olds in England, except for higher education. We're the largest ever non-departmental public body, set up by an act of parliament in 2000 from 74 different organisations and became operational in April 2001.
2. What are your aims as an organisation?
The LSC's goal is to build a learning society in which everyone has the opportunity to go as far as their talents will take them. Our plan is that by 2010, young people and adults in England will have gained the knowledge and skills to match the best in the world. It's a massive task, which is why we've been allocated an equally massive budget of £8 billion.
We are working towards this by funding and planning:
- Further education sector colleges
- Work-based learning for young people
- Workforce development
- Adult and community learning
- Information, advice and guidance for adults
- School sixth forms
- Education-business links
3. Where are your offices based?
The LSC currently has local offices across 9 Regions in England and a National Office based in Coventry. Please review the Our Structure section for further information.
