What the LSC does

The job of the Learning and Skills Council is to transform post-16 learning and skills in England. Nothing less will do.

The job needs to be done for two reasons. First, the productivity of our workforce lags behind that of our major competitors. Improving skills in order to boost productivity is the biggest challenge facing businesses.

Secondly, too many individuals do not have the basic skills they need for work or to achieve the quality of life they want. We have a duty to support social inclusion as well as economic competitiveness.

Working with partners locally, regionally, nationally and across sectors, we have an important leadership role, providing drive and direction to the delivery of world-class learning and skills. We are deciding how best to invest some £9 billion of public money to deliver the skills that employers and individuals need, and to realise the nation’s ambition to compete with the best in the world.
