What we do

‘Our future. It’s in our hands’

Our future. It’s in our hands is the LSC’s most ambitious communications campaign ever and aims to inspire people across England to take control of their future through learning and play an active role in achieving their full potential.

Over the next five years we and our partners the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills, the Sector Skills Development Agency and learning providers across the country, aim to transform the way people think, feel and act about learning and skills. We hope that people will recognise the value of learning and want to develop their skills and, in the case of employers, those of their employees. We will achieve this ambition through a lasting, memorable and actively supported campaign which will be used and developed by everyone in Further Education.

We all need better skills than ever before. Lord Leitch in his Review of Skills, published in December 2006 set the UK the ambitious challenge to become a world leader in skills. Through this campaign and other programmes, we have begun the journey to help us achieve this.

In less than ten years there will be very few jobs that will require no skills at all. So we all need to take action. For individuals, skills training can help make you more attractive to employers, grow your career prospects and could also lead to a higher salary. Employers need to take note too - it is estimated that skills gaps cost £165,000 for a typical 50 employee business every year.

The ‘Our future. It’s in our hands’ campaign, will make it easy for everyone to access the information they need. A dedicated campaign phone line and website has been created giving a “one-stop shop” for all skills training information and support.
